A mind that never rests. Thoughts and ideas are going in merry-go-rounds and not feeling as if we are the conductor of the ride. I can remember feeling this way for years, even decades, and feeling a sense of loss because I didn’t know how to stop them if I wanted to. Of course, an abundance of creativity and solutions flowed from my ever-stirring mind, but so did a lot of stress, anxiety, and buzz.

I think the common misconception about meditation as an activity where we stop our thoughts is because the idea of ​​quieting the mind can actually be achieved by learning meditation skills. But stopping the mind and calming the mind are two different things. We don’t want to close the mind from thinking. As I mentioned above, this is where and how we come up with ideas, how we solve dilemmas, how we make progress! Quieting the mind is like filtering our thoughts, and we are the filter – we have control over what we choose to think about, and we are able to let go of what we know as disorganization. And equal parts quieting the mind is knowing when to engage in thought and when to rest in awareness, to be still without thinking at any given moment. When we put that lever in our power, we have control over the speed and direction of travel of our mind.

However, like having an expectation versus having an intention, we cannot set a timeline for when we will acquire the ability to calm the mind. no This will happen naturally and in its own time, as long as we continue our practice of meditation and practicing what is needed to experience a calm mind. So, at that moment, our task is simple: create the conditions for the mind to rest, for us to be still, and for our breath to be deep and our sole focus for the minutes we have allocated to our meditation practice. A calm mind will then emerge of its own accord.

Let us settle down and begin to breathe. . .
