~I invite you to listen to the audio version shared above, where a guided meditation is provided that follows what is shared below the text.
Distraction, living in a world of distraction, has been our mode of travel through the world for most of our lives since we first began to meditate. As with anything we’ve had no choice in designing, it often takes time to realize how unhelpful something is that we’ve lived with for so long and assumed ‘how it should be’. But being distracted should not be our daily modus operandi.
Being fully present, is not as easy as it sounds. And so, it takes time to recognize when distractions grab our attention, so that we can then pull ourselves out of it. As our meditation practice continues, we’ll notice that it takes less and less time to recognize when we’re being distracted, when we’re being pulled out of the present moment (ie, a thought grabs our attention while we’re sitting at the table or in a meeting). Gradually, the amount of time it takes to recognize when a distraction occurs will decrease.
That’s not to say the distractions will go away entirely at some point. they won’t It simply means that, because we are consciously holding ourselves in the present moment, we can more quickly recognize when this happens and give ourselves the choice to engage our thoughts or bring ourselves back to the present moment.
Be patient with yourself as you strengthen this muscle, which ultimately gives you the freedom to choose.
Let’s start practicing. . .
