Simply put, to clean an object is to clean it. The difference is that you’re not just cleaning it physically. What you are aiming to do is clean it with force.
Cleansing is the removal of all past energy from an item. Even with brand new ritual items, unwanted energy can emanate from a variety of sources. Almost any product involves the energy of multiple people who manage it from its creation to final sale.
If you buy something used, it already has a lot of power from the person who owned it before you.
Why clean an object before using the ritual?
Matter stores energy. And you don’t want to use a magical tool that has negative energy or power that you don’t know about because it will affect your work.
For this reason, you should clean all your magic and ritual items. This includes your athame, clothing, and any other equipment you plan to use in rituals or place on your altar.
Even the candles you use and the item you use Carve sigils on your candle should be cleaned.
How to clear an object
There are different ways to purify a magical object depending on what you have on hand and the material of the object.
Cleaning is a simple process. Start by cleaning the objects normally and caring for them as you would. For example, any stone should be cleaned with water and the right cleaner. Cast iron can be cleaned using salt and oil or any other way you like. Candles and other equipment can be dusted off and cleaned. Cleaning and sanitizing drinking and eating utensils is essential. Then continue to clean energetically.

General method of clearing an object
- smoothing An ancient ritual used by shamanic peoples all over the world. To clear an object, simply pass it through the smoke. It’s best to use a pure scent like sage, sandalwood, lavender, or rosemary, but use whatever feels best for you.
- You can also use your breath Cleanse and purify your tool by first grounding and centering yourself and then focusing your breath on the object.
- use the weather. You can leave your tools outside, ideally on a windy day, and let the wind take care of the work for you.
- You can pass things on a candle flameBut be careful and make sure that the object is not damaged. This will require you to have some visualization skills as you will need to visualize the growth and surroundings of the flame to purify it.
- Another natural cleanser sunlight. Place your ritual items in bright sunlight for at least an hour to burn off any bad energy. This will keep them clean and ready to charge with your energy for best results.
- moonlight Works similarly and is preferred for any material that may fade or otherwise be affected by sunlight and heat. This is especially important when it comes to certain gems and plants that you want to use for spells.
- You can wash the item running waterLike a tap or a stream, and say a simple prayer over the object while imagining all the bad energy and white light filling it. You can alternatively immerse the object in water to which a pinch of salt or a few drops of purifying essential oil have been added. If the object is very fragile, sprinkle it with a few drops of salt water.
- If the object is elastic, you can bury dirt or salt for at least one day. Any negative energy will be absorbed by the soil or salt. Sea salt has long been used to clear dense energy, especially in crystals and candles. Simply bury the object in a basin of salt for at least a day, then remove and rinse – making sure to get rid of the salt. You can vary this method by mixing sea salt with water and soaking or sprinkling your objects. But, depending on what they’re made of, not everything is fine with bath salts, so you should do some research first.
- Visualization The easiest method. Take the object in your hand, and imagine a clear, pure white light coming through your hand and into the object. This will remove any bad energy and fill the object with pure, clean energy.
- sound Another effective method of releasing and breaking stagnant energy; Try ringing a bell or some bells to purify your more delicate ritual items and ingredients for magical use.
Use your discretion and be realistic about cleaning it. Metal should not be soaked overnight in sea water as it will rust. Similarly, you should avoid keeping paper near fire.
Once you have cleaned your magical tools, you can bless or Sanctify them.
