When someone would go ahead, make big announcements, make affirmations, he would wait for the right moment and jokingly say: “Are you telling me, or asking me?”
He was not cruel.
He was actually accurate, I later learned.
Because there is a difference between a person who has achieved something and a person who is still trying to convince himself.
Volume is what gives it away.
But, first let’s talk about the trigger..
We can say that
restructuring
Something breaks.
A marriage ends.
The body gets worse.
A business collapses.
A breach of trust.
But the thing that broke wasn’t just an incident.
It was an identity.
And the human psyche, faced with the wreckage of who it thought it was, does what it always does: It rebuilds.
Now, that reconstruction is not dishonest.
Usually never.
That needs to be made clear.
The divorced man who becomes a devoted husband, the overweight man who becomes a competent father, the burnt-out executive who becomes a minimalist, the addict who becomes a peace advocate, these are real people doing real work.
The effort is genuine.
Change is often significant.
but There is a version of that reconstruction that quietly outsources something critical to the audience…
choice.
Amen.
‘You are such an inspiration.’
Comment that you have changed.
But these are not just vanity…
Rather, in a certain psychological pattern, They serve as load-bearing elements.
Move them, and the internal structure wobbles.
And it’s not a cure.
That is Outsource self worth
Broadcasting is not a cure. Sometimes it avoids it.
now,
I know this because I did it
I gained weight.
Slow and not glamorous.
I faced waking up one day and clearly realizing that I had gotten fat, and I had to pretend otherwise.
So I did it.
Immediately.
I lost 60 pounds.
I got fit.
I have created a version of myself that I am proud of.
And then I did something that, in retrospect, tells the whole story: i am Created an online persona called ‘Healthy’ Father.’
and,
I started posting food.
I post workouts.
I posted before and after.
I built it as accountability, inspiration, community.
And something That was true.
But something else was at work underneath.
Personality was working My inner world was not over yet.
I never fully faced why I let myself go in the first place.
I didn’t sit with the shame, the detachment from my own body, the quiet self-neglect before the weight gain.
I went straight from wound to trophy, and I invited the internet to confirm that I had arrived.
And in reality, my audience was carrying something for me without my knowledge.
Every interaction was a small proof that I was a different person now.
The problem is that evidence from the outside never fully settles the question inside.
now,
The pattern has many faces
And once you see architecture or structure, you recognize it everywhere.
Not to judge, but to understand…
D A faithful husband born againBroadcasting her devotion after a wedding ends, who fills her social media with anniversary posts and declarations of love that feel a little too loud, a little too frequent.
He can truly love his wife.
But the volume is working.
D Radical minimalist The one who lost everything financially and now posts about owning 47 properties, the one who turned scarcity into a brand, the one who executes simplicity with the same intensity that others do wealth.
Ideal is reality.
But so is restructuring.
D cool influencer Whose entire identity has crumbled into sobriety, who can’t post about Tuesday without mentioning recovery, whose entire online presence is a memento of not drinking.
Sobriety is earned and real.
But when introduced The person becomes calm insteadWork is still in progress.
D Rush culture dropouts Who spent a decade grinding and burning, and now run a slow-living brand with the same relentless, optimized intensity they bring to hustle.
Different content, same obligation.
Not general thread content.
it is compulsion
It is true that the inner sense of self is still dependent on external cues.
It is true that stopping broadcasting would feel like losing ground under their feet.
Here are some things I learned and observed…
You know you’ve really put something together when you can be cool about it.
You don’t need to share.
Your validation is not required.
you just ‘yes’ Now…
So, notice why we can do this external signal rather Inner knowledge?
Psychology below
Terror Management TheoryDeveloped by Jeff Greenberg and colleagues, suggests that when our sense of identity is threatened, we engage in symbolic self-defense.
In other words,
We don’t just change; We overclaim to buffer change against fear of regression.
Compensatory conviction Works the same way.
When we perceive a deficiency in one area of our identity, we demand the opposite side for compensation.
For example, a person who has failed in faithfulness is not only faithful…
He becomes the most publicly trusted person in your feed.
Erving Goffman also describes social life performancePresenting ourselves as something we present and conduct to an audience.
However, this is what he understood Performance and performer are never completely identical.
There is always a gap.
So, the question becomes whether you Perform to connect or perform to convince
Because when performance is about persuasion, the audience is no longer your community.
They are basically your coping mechanism.
That difference is important
Now, none of this is wrong with sharing your journey.
None of this means poor public performance.
Because line sharing is not.
The line is dependency
This is the real test…
about it The audience is needed input
Validity.
External signals that you are doing well.
That you are a good person.
A good husband.
A good father.
beautiful wife
skinny
is torn
in the form of…
Ask yourself honestly:
Can you stop posting anything for three months and still feel stable in your journey?
or,
When someone challenges your new identity and life, do you feel intrigued, amused, or threatened?
Are you sharing because it adds something to others or because the feedback adds something to you?
Is the story you tell in public the exact same story you tell at 2 in the morning?
Here is what I observed…
Integration is cool.
Not silent, but calm.
Someone who has actually done the work can talk about it without rushing.
They can hold it without performing.
This can be questioned without crumbling their architecture.
The thing that has changed has become part of them, not their whole.
Individuals still need viewers to put things together mid-reconstruction.
And it’s not a character flaw.
It is a signal or sign.
It is something that the psyche asks for only Internal work can actually provide.
True healing does not require an audience. It requires honesty. The audience is the alternative.
What others have to bear
Now, here’s the part that I don’t think can be said enough…
When your healing is performed publicly and the performance is load-bearing, you are asking your audience to bear something for you.
You’re asking them to constantly confirm, to constantly verify, and to constantly reflect the identity you’re trying to lock down.
And it’s a weight.
It is not visible.
And your followers don’t know they’re carrying it.
But when confirmations slow, when comments drop, when algorithms change and reach drops, someone whose recovery is audience-dependent doesn’t just feel irrelevant.
They feel restless.
And that Volatility proves that the work is never finished.
Listen, no one owes you their emotional labor in the service of your unresolved pain.
Not your partner, who can be a facilitator of your redemption narrative.
Not your children, who take pictures as proof of your transformation.
Not your followers, who are Signed up for inspiration and quietly funding a restructuring they know nothing about
Do the work so others don’t have to carry it for you.
here
What integration actually looks like
It’s hard to find people online who have done the real thing.
Not because they have disappeared, but because they are less important.
They post about their growth without needing to confirm you.
They can acknowledge failures that occurred prior to change without being flexible or over-explaining.
They don’t build their entire identity on a new version of themselves, because they understand that identity is not a destination.
And even then, believe me, the destination will change again.
Just give it time.
Also,
They can be interrogated.
They may be wrong.
Without it they might have had a bad week which meant the whole thing was a lie.
They are not performing for you.
They are just living in the direction they choose and sometimes sharing it because the connection is human, validation is not oxygen.
That’s the difference.
So, why is this rant relevant at all?
here’s why
My father’s question cuts both ways.
sometimes you to say.
sometimes you ask.
But healthy versions of both Knowing which is true.
The reconstruction we go through after failure or shame is necessary and human.
But at some point the scaffolding is supposed to come down.
The building is supposed to stand on its own.
When it can’t, when it still needs an audience to hold it, it’s not a universally performed force.
That is A sign that the real conversation hasn’t happened yet.
So, instead,
Have it in person.
with myself
With whom you trust.
With a professional, if the wound is deep enough.
The public version is shameful not because it is, but because you deserve something Audiences can never give you: Peace that holds and lasts when no one is looking.
