When Janice Hadlow wrote Another Bennett sister In 2020, he developed an affection for Elizabeth’s sister that we didn’t know we needed to get to know or understand better. However, I have a feeling the TSLL community understands her best because Mary Bennett speaks most easily to my prognosis. Simply, the way I understand her enjoyment of books, especially, the non-fiction refuge in her books, and finding joy in life by embracing her true self is multiplied, no matter how society defines what is ‘proper’ for a woman.
Disagree with the portrayal of Jane Austen, who described Mary Pride and Prejudice As “the only simple one” among the five sisters, “who worked hard for knowledge and achievement, was always impatient to show off.” Continually adding, “Mary had neither talent nor taste; and though arrogance gave her appeal, it gave her alike a professional air and a haughty manner, which would have hurt a higher excellence than she reached”, but I think I must speak for Mary, as Hadlow says, and says, You’ve only got it wrong this whole time.
Selected as a 2020 best book by Library Journal, NPR, and the Christian Science Monitor, Hadlow’s novel quickly became a sensation. And now, of course, we have the adapted television series. In the States, the series is available on BritBox (premiering May 6) and consists of 10 episodes (the series debuted in the UK in February), one available every Tuesday unless you pay for their Prime subscription, which lets you stream them all at once.

Ella Bruccolieri plays Mary, the audience member Call the midwife will recognize immediately. From Mary’s common-sense decision to wear glasses (so she can read and see clearly!) to her signature choice of beautiful clothes her uncle and aunt made for her children while she was a governess in London, in each episode we see her slowly learn about her true self, her curiosity, her strengths, and the world as she does. His aunt, played by Indira Verma, is an outstanding supporting character in the series, and so is Mr. Hayward, played by Donal Finn, who, if you’ve seen the latest young sherlock series, you will recognize as Moriarty.
Soundtrack for the series Written by Ann Chemeliewski, who I recently discovered while listening to Classic FM, shared that working on the show with the editing crew to compose the soundtrack was one of the most enjoyable experiences.
