My father received a special picture as a gift. It is a circular frame filled with water, sand and a hint of wind. How does it work? You turn the frame until the sand is at the top, separated from the water by a line of air bubbles. Then, you wait.
As the air bubbles slowly pop one by one, the sand mixes with the water. A little to the left. A little to the right. Maybe more in the middle, and then it’s back to the left. As the sand comes in black, white and gold shapes, the shapes begin to emerge. white desert A black mountain. A golden coastline.
If you’re lucky, enough sand remains above the air bubble to create a second landscape. At one point, we ended up with a range of three, the towering black pyramid at the top, and what looked like two cliffs by the sea below. A true masterpiece!
Rotate the frame too fast Or too slowly, however, and all the sand will fall down in a big depression. Thump! Here is your unknown mess of sand!
It’s funny. In a way, this frame lets you create the perfect artwork on demand — and yet, the process is just as easy to screw up. Also, if you time your turns right, there’s no telling what you’ll end up with. It’s almost as if beauty refuses to be framed entirely, let alone mass-produced.
