Travel: Is 2026 the Year of Nostalgic Travel?

by the speaker

Half of Americans believe 2026 will be a “year of nostalgia.” According to new research.

A general population survey of 2,000 Americans found that 48% focused on nostalgia for 2026 as a year — and this was especially common among younger respondents, perhaps fueled by social media trends like “2026 is the new 2016.”

54% of Millennials, as well as 61 percent of Genners surveyed, believe 2026 will be focused on nostalgia — compared to 44% of Gen Xers and just 37% of Baby Boomers.

Commissioned by Visit Anaheim And conducted by Talker Research, the survey explores respondents’ nostalgia, especially when it comes to their travel plans.

The results revealed vacations and travel will be heavily influenced by nostalgia this year.

Effects of Nostalgia on Vacation Intentions

Among those planning to travel in 2026 (65%), respondents said nostalgia will influence their travel destinations (53%), their activities (50%) and who they travel with (31%).

And the “nostalgia trip” is expected to peak during the summer. Of those taking a trip influenced by nostalgia, 49% said it would happen in the summer.

June is the peak for these nostalgia-focused trips, accounting for 21% of trips.

When asked which year they are most nostalgic for, the specific results varied greatly between generations – although each group chose a year from their youth.

Younger generations have therefore been nostalgic in recent years: Gen Z wants to relive 2012 and millennials choose 2006. The results found Gen X yearning for 1996 and baby boomers looking back to 1985.

The psychological roots of the phenomenon of nostalgia

“Nostalgia plays a strong role in how people think about travel,” said Scott Oaklin, Chief Marketing Officer, Visit Anaheim. “Many travelers are looking to reconnect with the places that shaped some of their best memories, whether that’s revisiting a favorite destination or sharing those experiences with a new generation. Travel gives people the opportunity to relive meaningful moments while creating new ones.”

What is causing this nostalgia phenomenon? Respondents are embracing nostalgia because it brings them back to a happier time (43%) and provides them with a sense of comfort (41%).

In addition, they say it helps their mental health (35%), brings them together with family (31%) and creates connections with their loved ones (30%).

More than a quarter say nostalgia has been beneficial to their overall well-being (30%) and allowed them to escape (28%) because there’s so much going on in the world right now (25%).

“Anaheim is a place that many people associate with childhood vacations, family traditions and milestone moments,” Oaklin said. “For many travelers, it’s the kind of destination they return to again and again, revisiting experiences that have become part of their family stories.”
