It is often presented to us that the more control we have, the more peace we will have. If we accept this so-called truth, we narrow down our life experiences—relationships, opportunities, and true peace.

Meditation reveals that we cannot control the thoughts that arise, but we can control what we embrace, focus on, and feed on. The same applies to life. We cannot control others, we cannot control the news, we cannot control the weather, and many other things, outside of ourselves, but we can control what we choose to nourish.

During our meditation sessions, we are practicing how to turn away from harmful or unproductive thoughts, and it is only when we learn this skill, and know that we know how to recognize what would be harmful or unproductive, that we experience true peace.

It’s like knowing how to react when we drive on ice and start to slide. If we know how to safely exit a slide and avoid colliding with an object without going against the slide, we feel more comfortable driving in icy conditions when we know they are passable with proper skill. And in living well, that skill we must learn is to maintain a sense of peace no matter what the day is.

Let’s begin our practice session to develop the skills that will lead us to peace. . .

~ To end each meditation session, I encourage you to recite a mantra of your choice and design. in Contentment MasterclassI’m sharing my example, which you’re welcome to use, tweak, or see as a template to design your own.
