Maybe you have a list of resolutions, dreams, life improvements that you set your intention to bring into being. Or maybe there is something that isn’t working in your life, and you don’t know how to fix it right now, you’re determined to figure out how to do it.
However, if we live in a perpetual state of self-improvement, we pull ourselves out of the present moment. We can still evolve intentionally, we can still improve whatever we want to change, but by using a different, and rather simpler tool, we will make living today as enjoyable as living in our dreams-tomorrow.
When we train the mind with the tools of meditation, we establish the ability to engage with our full awareness and compassion in our daily lives. When the new default involves these two skills – awareness and empathy, the byproduct is that our view of how well our lives are going now also changes.
Our external circumstances may not necessarily change, but the relationship with what we want to improve and why it isn’t working changes and gives us clarity.
When we unconsciously allow ourselves to be bogged down by society’s pressures and influences that try to convince us that we’re not doing enough, we’re not perfect enough, we’re not (fill in the blanks of the pressure you’re feeling right now that you need to improve), it becomes easy to think that we need to improve, and that’s definitely a false behavior involved, but it’s definitely a false behavior.
Improvements and desired changes are possible without permanently doing anything to contribute to them. Our contribution is to be aware of our life in the moment, and to fully engage with it – the moment, the people, our feelings – and honor what is needed while leading our flock in a direction that nourishes us now and our tomorrow.
