At fifty, I thought I was choosing between two men

Conclusion – Love goes a long way

Looking back now, I see that my dog, Truman’s, illness brought me to the greatest crossroads in my life. In trying to save her, I find myself revisiting old dreams, old loves, old wounds, and old questions. What followed taught me lessons I’m still learning today.

At fifty, I thought I was choosing between two men.

Looking back now, I realize I was choosing between two versions of myself.

I discovered that love is not always found in passion, excitement, or the road taken. Sometimes it is found in quiet acts of devotion that unfold over a lifetime.

A cup of tea is waiting on the table.

A hand to hold in mourning.

A husband who lives.

Chris and I have shared many years together since those events. Like every couple, we face challenges, losses, laughs, surprises, and the simple realities of life. Yet the lesson remains the same. The love I was looking for was never lost.

I need to learn how to recognize it.

This memoir begins with a young girl trying to find her place in the world.

It ends with a woman who understands that home is not a destination.

Home is the people walking beside us.

If there is any wisdom in the pages of this memoir, it is this:

Simple love, carefully tended throughout life, is one of life’s greatest blessings.

Thank you for walking that part of the road with me.

And roadThanks, continued.
