Last week, we talked about What a calm mind And the experience of a quiet mind is a peaceful, yes, blissful place for our awareness to rest. This is the state we want to experience when we sit to meditate, but expecting to experience this kind of bliss all day, every day once we become proficient in meditation leads to a monotonous, even stagnant life.

This does not mean that we want to live a life that involves constant chaos, not at all. But what we have to accept is that we can’t control everything in our day-to-day and that every day will happen no matter how many or how few people or activities are happening around us. Our lives become richer, and our mindfulness skills stronger when we observe these unwanted moments and instead of scoffing at them or sighing in frustration, we put our skills into practice.

Andy Puddicombe calls these events “compost – if we use it right, it can help us grow.” When we shift our perspective to those moments where our mind races or even becomes restless for opportunities to thrive, to note our mind’s restlessness and bring attention back to the breath so it doesn’t snowball, we give ourselves a gift that will provide manifold benefits in future unwanted moments down the road.

The hustle and bustle of life will continue. We don’t have to participate or practice it, but when we can’t change what’s around us, we can see it as a place to practice our ability to bring our mind back to rest in awareness. When we can do this in our daily lives, we begin to realize how helpful regular meditation can be.
