Today, “based on a true story” or “inspired by true events” is a common description of various films or novels. And one of the first novels to do that, well, actually it was a series that was published over two years (1844-1846), was Alexandre Dumas’ (pronounced without the ‘s’ because it’s a French name). The Count of Monte Cristo.
D The Life Story of Alex Dumas It is a story of intrigue, courage and triumph over injustice, just as fascinating as the life story of its main character, Edmond Dantes, who becomes the Count of Monte Cristo.
In a new adaptation of the Dumas classic Tale of Vengeance, originally published in 2024, this 8-part series premieres this Sunday, March 22, on PBS Masterpiece and is well worth watching. Having had the chance to preview the entire series earlier this month, I quickly realized that I wanted to select it as a Petit Plaisir because not only is the story told in all its detail (the original novel is over 1200 pages long), but the videography capturing Paris is superbly done. Taking place primarily on the Île de Cité and Île Saint Louis, viewers are transported back to the streets, decorations and clothing styles of early 19th-century Paris, and with each episode discovers an affection for Edmond Dantes, who has had his freedom unjustly taken from him, and will do what the three men must do for their power. Achieve it.
After almost 15 years in prison, during which time he befriends a fellow inmate, Abbe Faria (played by Jeremy Irons), the Abbe informs him of a treasure that has yet to be found on the island of Monte Cristo, and so, as the story progresses and those who know it best, Edmund finally escapes, and then finds some way to secure his life. his future
The first two episodes deal with his imprisonment and in the remaining six episodes, we empathize with his plight to avenge those who wronged him, we observe his intelligence, as well as the strong bond between those who know about his past and loyally stand by him, helping him at any cost. Towards his enemies, the Count does not harm them directly, but instead creates situations that allow them to reveal their true characters so that they can bring about their own downfall.
Sam Klafkin stars as the Count of Monte Cristo and is also an executive producer of the series. You’ll probably recognize a few other actors who play primary roles. If you are a fan of AcornTV Agatha RaisinYou will see Jason Barnett play Caderousse, and from golden age Blake Ritson plays Dangler.
