Sometimes anxiety, depression, sleep problems, panic and stress overwhelm people and cause them to struggle. It is important to learn to deal with these negative feelings before they become disruptive. Uncontrolled and uncontrollable stress and anxiety can also contribute to health problems and impair the ability to consistently work, live, and maintain meaningful relationships. But prioritizing learning to cope safely can help.
Northwell Health Shares five ways to manage stress and the onset of panic attacks.
break the loop. Experiencing stress, anxiety or panic is extremely unpleasant and difficult when they overthink and ruminate. This can cause stressed people to jump to extreme conclusions, all of which break a strained—and difficult—cycle. The first step? Understand how to break the loop. Sometimes it’s helpful to have an external cue, such as a bracelet or a sticky note as a reminder to use the next four options to break the loop.
energy release. Behavioral health practitioners sometimes think of stress, anxiety, or panic as a form of energy that needs to be redirected. There are many science-backed ways Deliberately channel This is the power. Different options work for different people. Some choose exercise. Walking, running, lifting weights or playing a favorite sport can help create a break, expend that energy and develop clarity. Self-expression is also helpful. This can include getting emotional, writing things down, or even screaming into a pillow. Some people find comfort in cleaning, or cleaning, their homes energetically, and others choose to break or smash things as an extreme expression of this stress, but choose a safe place to do this, such as a “break room,” for that catharsis.
Try mindfulness. In addition to eliminating or reducing the energy of stress, anxiety or panic, consciously paying attention to something can be useful and powerful: it’s called MindfulnessThe ability to be fully present and aware of the present moment, thoughts, feelings and surroundings, but without judging them. It’s a way to take a moment thoughtfully, but not reactively. Some types of mindfulness demand immediate attention, such as watching a fidget spinner or an exciting sporting event, but others require us to build our attention, such as becoming deeply interested in music, nature, a book, or art, and consciously noticing and observing our feelings about them.
Change the scene. Sometimes the most effective thing to do under stress is to “wash” the brain. One way to do this is simply Change of scenery. Maybe that means getting out of the house, taking a break from work, stepping outside for a few minutes, or going for a short drive. These and other exercises force the brain to tune in to new stimuli and break the loop. It’s different from distraction because intentionally changing the scene cognitively has a bigger impact on the brain than going on a small project for distraction.
Create an award. As people learn to cope, it is also helpful to pay attention to what helps them do so and what positive changes they can make to break the stress loop. When people successfully get through anxiety or panic without choosing something harmful like turning to chemicals or drugs, it’s important to build reward. While this step may not reduce stress or panic in the moment, a small indulgence after successfully calming down can act as positive reinforcement and prevent future panic attacks. It helps build mastery. Getting through a stressful ordeal without having a panic attack is a powerful key to confidence and helps manage future anxiety.
