Isolation destroys security. Use the “Call Five People” rule to break down your silos.

When you lead in isolation

  1. Perception is narrowed.
  2. Judgment is dull.
  3. Mistakes abound.
  4. The effect is shrinking.
  5. Doubts spread.
  6. Pride is strong.
  7. Failure compounds.

Spend 10 minutes with five different people.

Explain the situation.

Say, “My current thoughts are…”

Ask questions like…

  1. What comes to your mind after hearing it?
  2. What am I overlooking?
  3. If you were me, your first move would be tomorrow morning…?
  4. If I fail, what do I undo?
  5. What to do first?

When call five people

#1 You’ve circled the same problem for 48 hours. When you’re confused, talk to five people who trust you.

#2 Wonder how you are. Name five people who have done it.

#3. You are second guessing. Connect with five people who know your strengths.

#4. You are at a crossroads. Talk to people who ask great questions.

#5. The deadline for a big decision is pressing. What if I ask something?

#6. A high-stakes conversation is around the corner. Look for great relationship builders.

#7. You have earned a promotion. Ask, “What is the key to success in the next 90 days?”

Potential members of your “call five” roster

  1. Sage: A mentor or leader with insight and experience.
  2. Dissident: A person who practices constructive dissent.
  3. Peer: Someone who is in the trenches with you.
  4. The Outsider: Someone removed from your industry. Look for a human reality check.
  5. The Frontline: A team member directly affected by the issue.
  6. The Dreamer: This person usually says, “What about…” or “We could…”
  7. Doer: Someone who always finishes what they start.
  8. The Filler: An empath who feels what others feel.
