Children are more likely to worry about money at home than parents realize as families face mid-term expenses.

A census-wide survey of UK parents and children aged six to 12 found that children were almost 60% more likely to perceive family problems or money worries as their biggest sources of stress.

According to new research from children’s wellness platform Super Chill, children as young as six may worry about family finances more than parents realize.

A census-wide survey of UK parents and children aged six to 12 found that children were almost 60% more likely to perceive family problems or money worries as their biggest sources of stress.

About one in eight children cited family problems or money worries, compared to fewer than one in 12 parents who believed financial or family stress was a major concern for their child.

The results come as many families face increased costs for childcare, food, activities and day outs during half term.

Children often absorb family anxiety even when parents try to shield them from money worries, Super Chill said, with the anxiety sometimes showing up through behavior changes, withdrawal or reluctance to ask for things.

Geert Pelsma, CEO of Super Chill, said: “Half term can be brilliant for children, but it can also bring changes to routines, extra stress for busy homes and families.

“Our research suggests that children are often aware when experiencing some stress at home, even when adults try to shield them from it.

“At Super Chill, we focus on helping kids manage those everyday feelings before they become overwhelming. Simple check-ins, breathing exercises and conversational prompts can give kids a way to name what they’re feeling and give parents a better idea of what’s going on.

“Kids don’t always need big explanations. Often, they need quiet reassurance, routine, and small moments where they feel heard.”

The study also found that friendships and schoolwork remain among the biggest daily worries for children, with more than one in three children saying friendships worry them the most and nearly three in ten citing schoolwork.

Super Chill is a free, ad-free kids’ wellness platform that helps kids better understand and express how they’re feeling through emotional check-ins, guided calming exercises, and conversation-starting chat cards designed to support family communication.
