Emptiness is not comfort. It’s a place that still doesn’t know what it’s for.
People rarely leave everything at once.
These are similar to seasons, although this is not entirely accurate. They regress to small things that you only notice later. Stop saying a name to you. No one sits in a chair. Sunday lunch was very loud.
For a while, the space they leave is just an absence.
You walk around it.
You pretend it’s not there.
And then, slowly, it becomes something else.
Not a wound.
a house
And one day, someone enters. A friend you never expected. Or a quiet one that, it turns out, you’ve been missing all along.
That’s when you realize that the room wasn’t empty for a reason.
Everyone you lose makes room for what you need.
Not as a comfort.
As architecture.
