Fat shying women is misogyny in disguise
On the surface, most people wouldn’t associate a woman’s weight with promiscuity because, well, men get fat-shamed too, and weight is something we can all control. Therefore, judgment is seen as “tough love” for a bad lifestyle choice.
Only when you look deeply will you realize that most men are involved in this problem.
You see, unlike men, women don’t have the privilege of separating their worth from their appearance.
Historically, at least in the West, women have always been objectified. Rather than being seen as autonomous individuals, they were treated as property owned by fathers and husbands, or as marriageable goods to protect wealth and patrilineal lineage.
These systems of oppression do not disappear simply because of modernity. They evolve, become embedded in media, religion and family structures.
So while heavy-set men may occasionally face fat jokes, they’re still respected for the mere fact of being men. They don’t face the same social and financial penalties as plus-size women, hence why it’s so easy to see strong, successful men overweight.
Try to find the same for women, and you will be looking for a long time.
Once a person is reduced to property and commodity, the inevitable consequence is objectification. And what is objectification if not impurity? I know it sounds like a stretch. But listen to me.
Misogyny requires prejudice, when you reduce women to stereotypes — for example, calling women irrational, emotional creatures. This leads to contempt: the belief that women are not worth considering because they cannot reason and need male leadership.
They become worthy or valuable when they are either loyal or fuckable.
The only problem is that Emma is failing at the latter.
Through no fault of her own, she doesn’t conform to the feminine standards of beauty set by the patriarchy, which is why men see fit to use her weight as a punchline for their jokes.
But it’s not just the joke that’s disgusting; It’s the underlying assumption that fat women are so starved for male attention that they’ll automatically be grateful for any male interest, no matter who he is. By pretending to like him, he exploited that exact assumption. Really bad job.
Here’s what happened next…
For those wondering what happened after this ordeal, Emma actually made a follow-up video.
After the original TikTok exploded to 6.7 million views, the prankster reached out to apologize. She claimed it wasn’t him but the alcohol talking and he wanted to make it up to her by taking her out on a date – which she refused. So, thank him for that. Such behavior is no accident. It’s that he is through and through, sober or drunk.
Thankfully, more and more women are speaking up. Earlier, women like Emma had no choice but to remain silent and mistreated. But thanks to social media, they now have a voice. They can single out these victims to warn other women to tread carefully when navigating this dating road.
If men truly want to be more accepting of modern women, they need to change to see them as human beings. Let them cook till then.
