
A particular kind of afternoon has become familiar to many of us: you look out the window and the light is wrong. Amber, plain, a little apocalyptic.
The sky smells faintly like a campfire that no one lights. Wildfire smoke has rolled in (maybe from a few states away, maybe an entire country) and suddenly the safest place to breathe is inside with the windows closed.
The problem is that a good commercial air purifier can cost more than most of us can afford on short notice, and when smog season hits, they sell out quickly.
The good news is that you can build a truly functional one DIY air purifier Uses one in about ten minutes Box fan And a furnace filter, and this is not a folk remedy. This is a design that has been tested in the laboratory and holds up.
Here’s exactly how to make one, why it works, and how to run it safely.
What is a DIY air cleaner, exactly?
A DIY air cleaner As simple as a home project: You attach a high-efficiency home air filter to the back of a simple box fan.
The fan draws room air through the filter, the filter traps tiny smoke particles, and clean air comes out the front. That’s the whole idea.
The particles we worry about during a smog event are called PM2.5: particulate matter fine enough to travel deep into your lungs and even pass into your bloodstream.
This is why wildfire smoke feels tight in your chest and stings your eyes. A Box fan air filter The setup is specially designed to pull those particles out of the air you breathe.
What makes this worth writing about is that EPA researchers actually put these domestic units through their paces in a controlled laboratory chamber using simulated wildfire smoke.
Their findings were titled Every Budget-Conscious Family Wants to Hear: A DIY air purifier Was effective as a small commercial air cleaner to reduce fine-particle concentrations. You are not settling for a lesser option. You’re getting comparable results for a fraction of the price.
What you will need
You can find all of this at a hardware store, and you may already have half of it in the garage.
- A box fan: A standard 20″ x 20″ model. Use a newer fan (a 2012 model or newer) that bears a recognized safety certification mark, such as UL or ETL. More on why this is important in the security section below.
- A high-efficiency air filter: A 20″ x 20″ furnace filter, either 1″ or 4″ thick. find one MERV 13 The MERV 13 rating is the sweet spot: fine enough to capture smoke particles, but not so dense that it blocks airflow.
- Something to attach the filter to the fan: Clamps, duct tape or bungee cords all work.
- A piece of cardboard (Optional, but really worth it; see the Upgrades section).
That’s it. No tools, no special skills, no trips to special shops.
How to Build a Box Fan Air Purifier: Step by Step
- Find the airflow arrow on your filter. A small arrow is printed on the side of each furnace filter showing the direction the air will flow through. This is important, because a filter installed backwards will not do its job.
- Place the filter on the intake side of the fan. It is behind the fan, where the air is drawn. Align it so the airflow arrow points towards Fan, the fan blows in the same direction.
- It is safe. Clamp, tape or bungee the filter to the back of the fan. You want a snug seal around it so air is forced in through Filter rather than sneaking around the edges.
- Set it up and turn it on. Stand the unit in the middle of the room where you spend the most time, plug it in and let it run. The bedroom and living room are the usual priorities.
Drive at a comfortable pace. Higher speed moves more air (and cleans faster), but even a medium setting makes a real difference within an hour.
Upgrade: Better, better, better
The basic single-filter build works well. But the EPA’s testing found a few simple ways to make it work better, and they cost almost nothing.
Better: Add a cardboard shroud. This is the upgrade I would recommend to everyone, because it’s free and it helps measurably Cut a fan-shaped piece of cardboard with a hole in the middle to match the fan blade and fit it to the front.
This prevents air from recirculating from the tips of the fan blades, meaning more air is pushed through the filter instead of circulating uselessly. In testing, this simple shroud improved performance.
Better and better: Use multiple filters. Instead of a single flat filter on the back, you can create a two-filter (or multi-filter) configuration that allows the fan to draw more filter surface area.
Designs that used multiple filters increased air-cleaning capacity, and here’s the flip side: They actually were More cost effectiveBecause you’re getting a lot more clean power from the same single fan.
If you’re decorating a large room or you know you’ll be running it hard all season, the multi-filter build is one to reach for.
The part that everyone skips: replace your filter
This is the single most important maintenance point, so I’m giving it its own section.
A clean filter works. Not a dirty one. The EPA’s tests found that DIY air cleaners with filters already loaded with smoke or dust were almost completely ineffective. A gray, clogged filter is not a sign that it is “working hard”.
This is a sign that it has stopped working and is now just an obstacle against which the fan is fighting.
So check your filter regularly during heavy smoke and replace it if it looks dirty.
Replacement filters are inexpensive, especially compared to the cartridges required in a commercial purifier, which is a big part of why these DIY units become a more economical choice over time.
Is it safe to run a DIY air purifier?
This is the most common and most reasonable question people ask before running a fan-and-filter contraption while sleeping. It’s the right instinct.
Here’s what the research actually says. In 2021, Chemical Insights Research Institute of Underwriters Laboratories (UL), working with EPAConducted a study specifically to assess the fire and burn risk of operating these DIY air cleaners.
They tested five different commercial box fan models using the basic single-filter design. They tested with clean filters, with filters loaded with smoke and dust, and even in worst-case scenarios where one or both sides of the fan were blocked.
None of the conditions tested presented a burn or fire hazard.
This is indeed reassuring, but the researchers also identified some worthy best practices as follows:
- Use a new box fan: A 2012 model or newer, which is when major safety features become standard.
- Choose a fan with built-in safety features Like a fused plug and a thermal cutoff (a mechanism that shuts off the fan when the motor overheats). The security certification mark on the box is your signal that these protections are present
- Do not block airflow More than the filter itself does, and don’t press anything on top of the unit.
Follow them, and you’ve got a device that tests show isn’t a fire or burn hazard in situations where people actually use it.
Make it blend in
An honest downside: A box fan stuck in a furnace filter isn’t going to win any design awards, and it’s louder than a sleek commercial unit.
If it’s been in your living room for weeks, it’s worth a few minutes to help it disappear.

A few general questions
Does a box fan air filter really work against wildfire smoke? Yes, and this is not a guess. In EPA laboratory tests with simulated wildfire smoke, a DIY box fan air cleaner reduced fine-particle (PM2.5) levels as well as a small commercial air purifier.
Should I use the MERV rating? MERV 13 is the standard recommendation. This captures fine smoke particles while still allowing the fan to move enough air to be effective.
One filter or four? One works. Multiple filters clean more air and, surprisingly, tend to be more cost-effective as a single fan does more work. Match this with the size of your room and how hard you’ll be driving it.
Is it safe to run overnight? Testing found no fire or burn risk under real-world conditions, provided you use a new, safety-certified fan (2012 or newer, with a fused plug and thermal cutoff) and don’t block airflow.
How often should I replace the filter? Whenever it looks dirty. A clogged filter is almost useless, so during heavy smoke, check it often and change it as needed.
Breathe easily
Clean air shouldn’t be a luxury, and thanks to a box fan, a furnace filter, and a few minutes of your time, it doesn’t have to be. Have the ingredients on hand before smoke season arrives.
An extra filter tucked away in the closet costs next to nothing and means you’re all set the next time the sky turns amber. Build it, run it, keep the filter fresh and give your lungs a rest somewhere.
