Caleb Shomo, frontman of award-winning metalcore band Beartooth, has shared with the world that he’s “proudly a gay man.” Emotional Instagram post on Saturday.
The Columbus, Ohio, native shared that there has been a lot of speculation about his personal life and he wants to “set the record straight.”
“I’m proudly a gay man,” Shomo posted.
Shomo founded Beartooth in Ohio in 2012, and the band signed to Red Bull Records in 2013. They have released five studio albums and toured the world including participating in the famous Warped Tour in 2014 Beartooth has received multiple awards, including being named He20 Britain’s Best International Artist by He2wards20 Music.
Shomo shared that he had been “unpacking and reckoning” with his sexual orientation “for quite some time now” and that his struggles found their way into early Beartooth albums that explored his religious upbringing, depression and self-loathing.
“I’m grateful for all these albums, yet sometimes feel embarrassed that I never allowed myself to dig into the roots for so long.”
Shomo posted that the timing coincided with the creation of his band’s next album, and that he was determined not to write a note or lyric before he was able to fully express himself.
Shomo wrote, “I will follow wherever it leads me and I refuse to water down any part of everything from the music to the lyrical content and the way I portray myself.”
He closes by encouraging those who are struggling to give themselves grace and patience.
“Be honest with yourself,” she posted. “Work hard instead of burying it as deep as you think it will change like I did. These things only hurt you and those around you.”
Fleur Shomo, Caleb’s wife of 14 years, He also posted on Instagram on SaturdayShe shares the struggles she currently faces while navigating her husband’s coming out as LGBTQ+.
“I’m the only one who has to deal with the duality of this situation,” Fleur wrote. “It was incredibly difficult to support him when he lost everything. You can love and support your person at the most difficult time in their life, and at the same time completely break down and lose yourself.”
He hopes that people in similar situations find “hope and courage” and that fans continue to support Caleb. 🔥
