Mindfulness has a teaching about the kind of knowledge we impart by training the mind, especially understanding our own mind. Through practice, through meditation in strengthening mindfulness, we experience our mind, and Jack Kornfield reminds us in his book wise heart, It is like “standing under a ripe mango tree. We can choose between good and rotten mangoes. This is for your benefit, because you know which fruit will make you sick and which will make you well.”
Through regular meditation practice we become more trained to understand our mind, we become better able to step back and observe and not get stuck in the ‘thinking mind’, which we have been doing unconsciously for most of our lives, living by whim and reacting wherever it takes us. With the new power of our mind, we put ourselves in the driver’s seat of where we let your mind wander and when we divert its attention from where it has led us unstructuredly in the past.
We practice meditation so that we can observe both pleasant and unpleasant thoughts and feelings, healthy or unhealthy fruit, associated with standing under a mango tree. Before we trained our minds, we simply accepted the fruit that fell, regardless of its quality. Now, we get to choose. And we choose to engage in healthy, joyful, constructive thoughts. We choose thoughts that will help us create the conditions for love, kindness, honesty, and simplicity to experience within ourselves and with others.
