Where I live, in snow bunny heaven, when winter rains instead of snow, I’m the rare bird that tickles the occasion. Don’t get me wrong, I love snow too. The magical environment created by Mother Nature is wonderful and offers many ways to enjoy this winter weather. Whatever the gift of the occasion, as well as any other weather throughout the year—a sunny day, a brisk breeze that blows one weather front and ushers in another—we are practicing acceptance and presence.
One muscle that is strengthened when we meditate is the ability to find stability in an ever-changing situation. As our daily lives change, from emotions and feelings, to the news of the day, to anything beyond our control, we understand how to be present without getting distracted. That doesn’t mean we don’t care, but we have the power to choose what and how we engage, if at all. We understand how to choose and that knowing gives us peace. Like the constant change of weather from one day to the next, from one hour to the next, let alone from one season to the next, if we can embrace what is, in addition to understanding its impermanence, we discover that whatever the weather is to navigate calmly. We discover what it feels like to rest in contentment. Meditation teaches us how.
By finding beauty in all the weather, or bringing it home to the various occasions in our lives we live, we banish fear and find our stability. A stability we give ourselves.
