Wide open space. Whether it’s a wide open prairie or an empty parking lot, maybe ours is a museum in its entirety or a public garden we’ve arrived at earlier in the day where few people have come to tour it, space is full of possibilities – going at our own pace, following our curiosity wherever it takes, learning to drive and park earlier. The parking lot becomes a safe place to learn without fear, without rushing.
Our minds, when we stop demanding certain tasks to be accomplished—come up with this solution, go to sleep now because I have to wake up in six hours, or overcome this fear of the unknown—are finally able to do what we need for peace. When we relax our mind by letting go of constant rehashing, overthinking, worrying or wondering, we give it the space it needs to achieve the clarity we mistakenly thought we could discover by being its taskmaster.
Try this the next time you can’t fall asleep, and you seem able to think about how you can’t fall asleep. Start counting. Similar to counting your breath when you are meditating, take a deep breath, count to six, then exhale slowly, also for a count of six. keep doing it Just focusing on counting and breathing deeply. You are making room for your mind, and thus your being, to fall asleep. You have stopped asking for something, or should I say, demanding it. By demanding it do something, you’re actually resisting the exact result you want – you’re not letting your mind rest, so it won’t fall asleep. Keep counting and soon, you’ll wake up in the morning, discovering that letting go is all you need to do.
~ To end each meditation session, I encourage you to recite a mantra of your choice and design. in Contentment MasterclassI’m sharing my example, which you’re welcome to use, tweak, or see as a template to design your own.
