Making a tea pot.
The water coming from the tap is just that water. It is not tea or any other liquid. just water H20. Similarly in life, we must look at reality to make it something different, something new, or to improve upon what is. But if we misunderstand, back to our metaphor, what’s coming out of our kitchen faucet, we won’t end up with tea.
Taking water as what we start with, we like to put it in a kettle and heat it to a boil. We then apply our knowledge of how to steep the tea to our desired flavor by adding a tea bag or loose leaf herb or dried herb to the hot water. Within minutes, we would be sipping tea that was just water a moment ago. It’s not magic; It’s about understanding the process and having the right ingredients, even if the ingredients are new or new to us. And it starts with acknowledging where we are when we begin.
When we refuse to see what is, we create suffering, and it is completely avoidable, because all suffering (as opposed to pain, as we talked about in No. 21). When we reject life, we may think we are helping ourselves, but in reality, we are causing suffering. By accepting what is, what at first seems counterintuitive is actually the beginning of the journey to create the change we seek.
Meditation gives us the tools to be able to observe our mind at all times and in instances where we are not accepting reality, we are able to notice these instances as well. By simply noticing when we refuse to accept something, we give the mind space to relax and we begin to feel more relaxed. Not because we like what happened, but because we are no longer fighting it. This is how we give ourselves the freedom to think with clarity instead of reacting from a place of emotional pain, which is often not constructive.
Even when unwanted, we give ourselves the necessary space to gain clarity, so that when we make a decision, we make one that will serve us well on our journey forward.
Let’s begin. . .
