sitting to meditate Taking five or ten minutes each day to ourselves, to practice observing our thoughts, may seem like a luxury, but it is only a luxury if we think that peace is not fundamental to a civilized world.
Finding peace within our own mind strengthens the possibility that we will engage peacefully, without reaction, without malice, without harm, with all other sentient beings. As we become stronger in our meditation practice of witnessing unwanted thoughts that help prevent rash decisions and actions, we also begin to realize that we are not alone in navigating such feelings. What is happening is that our empathy is deepening.
Our circumstances may be different from others, and indeed will be quite unique to our way of life, but feeling fear, feeling pain, feeling sadness, these are all emotions that we all experience, even if we relate to them differently.
When we strengthen our compassion, we see the humanity in others and all sentient beings and are motivated to stop causing them pain that we have the power to prevent.
We meditate not only for our own well-being but also for the well-being of others. So the next time you question whether meditation is beneficial, even if you can’t yet see how it’s empowering peace in your own life, remember that you’re doing it for every living being you see, cross paths with, and interact with in your life.
