~I invite you to listen to the audio version shared above, where a guided meditation is provided that follows what is shared below the text.
By now, as you progress through this series, you’ve been meditating for eight weeks. It doesn’t matter if it’s daily or weekly; You’re here today, sitting down, taking a moment to settle down, and that’s often the hardest hurdle to overcome. Pat yourself on the back.
When we talk about meditation, there is a common phrase that is shared about what is asked of us and what the act of meditation consists of; It’s effortless effort. Effortless, much like a long breath or sigh of relief, appreciation or satisfaction, a peaceful, nurturing place to rest and a state of being. Meditation is resting in awareness, resting in the present moment without preoccupation, doing nothing, just observing. Once we become comfortable resting in awareness, meditation, and begin to carry these learned mindfulness skills into our daily lives, being mindful becomes a comfortable place to rest.
At first, however, we must make an effort to learn the skill of meditation, but with consistent effort, when we begin to feel comfortable, relaxed, and calm, less effort is required and it becomes an effortless habit, an effortless effort. Why? Because when we sit, focus on our breathing, witnessing, watching our thoughts, we have nothing to do. And when we notice that we are involved in our thoughts, we immediately step back and start witnessing again instead of engaging. Engagement requires effort, and we are learning the skills to choose when to engage and when not to. When we meditate, we relax. We are still, and focused on our breath to bring us back to the moment.
Let’s begin. . .
