Day 4: Help your body feel better by changing your state of mind
Anxiety increases sensitivity to pain. This is true for most of us as well The more pain we feel, the more anxious we become. As we become more anxious, we feel anxious and less optimistic about our future.
Our thoughts are tuned into The Suffering Channel.
Unfortunately, research shows that Anxious, depressive thoughts make our pain worse.
Now this is the definition of a vicious circle!
Tapping (EFT) can break the cycle, calm the painful emotions surrounding the pain, and actually reduce our sensitivity.
Whenever we are in a negative state of mind and give ourselves some relief, we become even more so resilient. The more we practice the easier it becomes to shift negative emotions.
Regular tapping helps us get stuck in “bad places.”
Let’s look at three common mental states that often occur when we suffer.
1) I am taking too long to heal
Ignoring this feeling of impatience will not make it go away. Resisting it drains your energy.
But tapping into these sensitive states can reduce intensity. Start where you are… with what you honestly feel. Accept yourself where you are. As you reveal this state, you may be pleasantly surprised to find that you become more aware of the ways in which you are changing and how often you do so.
Tap along to this audio: I am taking a long time to heal (MP3)
2) I am ashamed of myself
Let’s face it, our society encourages us to “tough it out” and muscle through pain and illness. When we hurt, there’s often a hidden shame—a thought that we should be braver, stronger, and more willful.
But that willpower may have gotten us out of balance and into the painful place we are now!
What if your body really needs support? If it hurts because it is injured and stressed and needs care? What if there is nothing to be ashamed of?
This tapping audio is designed to soften and transfer shame: I am ashamed of myself (MP3)
3) I am very lonely
Being in pain can isolate you. When you’re hurt, you have less energy and enthusiasm for social events, less time and focus to make new friends and deepen the ones you have.
Isolation is stressful for the body and mind. We are social creatures and each of us craves more or less interaction. Heart connection is healthy.
By acknowledging loneliness and tapping into the feeling, you can reduce the tension surrounding it. You can shift loneliness from a hidden shame to an explicit ask for more support. Being around people is also less stressful when you’re in a calm, confident place. Let’s tap something:
Hand Direction (Karate Chop): Although I am very alone… I love and accept myself deeply and completely.
Even though all this pain has torn me apart, and I’m so lonely… I’m open to change, and I accept myself and what I’m feeling.
I’m very lonely though, and that hurts too… I’m learning to let go of old beliefs and hurts and that leaves more room for people in my life.
Eyebrows: I am very lonely.
Eye direction: Loneliness hurts my heart.
Under the eyes: I think I’m ready to release it.
Under the nose: I was stuck.
Chin: But now I have new support.
Collarbone: And I’m healing my emotions…
Under Arm: …and my faith.
Above the head: Releasing old traumas.
Eyebrows: I have become very lonely.
Eye direction: I didn’t have the energy to connect.
Under the eyes: But that is changing.
Under the nose: And I ask the Universe to help me spot new friends…
Chin: …and reconnect with old ones
Collarbone: I am taking care of myself to a new level.
Under Arm: I am open to a new circle of support,
Above the head: I help my body feel safe and loved.
Take a deep breath. Notice how your body feels. Write down any thoughts or memories that come up so you can tap into them when they feel right.
And here’s another bonus tapping audio for that feeling, our heart-gift to you to help ease the loneliness: I am very lonely (MP3)
By changing your mental state, you can change how sensitive you are to pain and how much pain your body experiences. When you’re in pain, it’s often hard to focus and know where to start. Having a list of tappable issues, or Go to a coach Can really help.
