Day 2: Trauma and pain

Are past traumas causing the painful pain you feel today?

Of course, it makes sense to everyone that past traumas contribute to the pain we feel now… if past traumas have caused physical injuries that have not yet healed.

But what about emotional trauma when we were children? And what about life experiences that have left us feeling scared and even pained decades later… long after the trauma “should” have happened?

We now know from decades of research that trauma relief is key to pain relief. Although most people are not aware of the connection, they are interrelated.

Subconscious stress connection

Leading researchers in the fields of trauma and neurology have found that our bodies become “preconditioned” by early trauma. Even minor disasters That is not addressed Can make the body more susceptible to future illness, addiction and pain.

These unresolved traumas trigger the body into a perpetual stress response that affects every part of us… from the chemical mix in our bloodstream to how our brain reacts to every stimulus.

If a person is exposed to four or more negative, traumatic experiences during childhood, they are twice as likely to be obese, twice as likely to have a heart attack, four times as likely to develop emphysema, four times as likely to be depressed, and ten times as likely to become addicted to drugs like heroin.

Such evidence leads us to ask the question:

  • What does trauma demand on our bodies and energy systems on a moment-to-moment basis?
  • What kind of underlying subconscious stress is always present in the body when someone has unresolved trauma?

Experts in this field note that trauma by its very nature is a Shock into our system, and a part of us is “frozen” in that state. Trauma makes us feel helpless and out of control. It floods our body with some powerful chemicals. And if we haven’t release Trauma, every time we are reminded of it, our body gets the same feeling and dose of stress chemicals.

Some of us, unfortunately, had childhoods with trauma after trauma. But for our long-term experience it really takes an unresolved trauma:

  • Signs of mental imbalance
  • Posture patterns that lead to chronic pain and discomfort
  • Disconnection and dissociation from the body

You can’t even feel yourself anymore…

Big T and Little T

Trauma is not just car accidents and wars. Losing his mother at the grocery store can be traumatic for a young child. So can being bullied by a teacher.

Whether a negative experience has a big impact or a small one depends on many, many factors that are beyond our control (…at least until we arm ourselves with an effective trauma relief technique).

So if you’re looking for pain relief, it’s important to look at the traumas in your life that cause fear and pain so you can bring relief now.

How can you tell if an old trauma still affects you? When you focus your attention on the experience, your body either reacts with intensity (anxiety, fear, nausea, increased pain, rigidity, anger, desire to run, etc.) or… you feel disconnected from your body, like you’re no longer there, or don’t want to be.

How does it feel when old traumas are resolved? Like turning on an old movie you didn’t really like the first time but you know you can just flip the channel. Or listening to an old song that might make you say “eeek” but doesn’t cause sadness, guilt, shame, or distress.

Resolved traumas are like remembering the smell or taste of something that once made you sick, now you don’t feel sick to your stomach.

Meaning, you don’t “forget” … you just aren’t painfully affected by them. You would no longer describe the feeling as “neutral” rather than “upset.”

Tapping into the trauma energy in the body

Where are you feeling the pain now? Place your hand gently on that area, and close your eyes, take a breath and just “feel” (gently explore).

How does it feel? Feeling cold? Does it feel angry? Does it feel hurt or sad? Make your best guess as to what the emotion might be and let’s tap something.

Hand side (karate chop): Although this part of my body hurts, and there may be some old trauma stored here… I deeply and completely love and accept myself and this part of me.

Although I am not sure what trauma is… I am open to clarification and understanding. I want to feel better.

Even though my body may have trauma, and it makes me feel scared… I send love and comfort to this part of my body, and ask it to help me release these old feelings so I can feel better.

Eyebrows: This pain in my body.
Eye direction: This trauma in my body.
Under the eyes: I am ready to release it.
Under the nose: My body has been holding this all along.
Chin: Waiting for me to notice.
Collarbone: Thanks body!
Under Arm: I send you comfort and love.
Above the head: You have been strong for me.

Eyebrows: I’m sorry to hurt you.
Eye direction: Please give me clarity on what you need.
Under the eyes: It’s okay to let go of the past.
Under the nose: It’s okay to feel good.
Chin: This trauma has been accumulating for a long time.
Collarbone: But I am safe now.
Under Arm: I thank my body for what it has done for me.
Above the head: And I now invite it to help me release this trauma.

Take a deep breath. Notice how your body feels and any thoughts or memories that come up. It might be better to write them down so that you can tap on them when it feels right

By paying attention to your body and comforting it, you can begin to release old trauma and pain.
