Staying Motivated: 6 Practical Steps

Michael, a husband and father of two and in his early fifties, was a logistics manager for a frozen food company.

He made enough to support his family, and by all accounts, they were doing just fine…

… But he knew he could do more.

He was dreaming of quitting his job and starting his own business. And on top of that, he wanted to lose weight.

Her doctor told her she was about 40 pounds overweight, and needed to lose weight. So he woke up early to find time for himself and work on his dreams.

He would get up at 5:30 a.m. to exercise, have a light breakfast and do some research on his business.

For the first month and a half he stuck to his new routine. It felt empowering; Michael was motivated to get out of bed to jump start his day.

However, what he didn’t expect was to run out of steam. As the weeks went by, Michael felt worn down by the grind.

And slowly, his motivation slowly faded away. Instead of getting out of bed, he goes back to hitting the snooze button to get “five more minutes.”

But it stretched out an hour, and just like that he went back to his old ways.

Michael didn’t know what was happening to him.

Inspiration can be elusive. As much as we want to get that feeling on tap, it seems dry up Every now and then.

But without it, it is difficult to achieve your goals and realize your dreams.

A study by a network of universities in Spain shows that the neurochemical dopamine plays an important role in motivation.

Dopamine was only associated with positive emotions, but it turns out, it also affects your desire to get things done.

What happens is that this hormone fires up in the brain in anticipation of a desired outcome. This, in turn, can motivate a person to make that outcome happen.

In another study, scientists found that rats with higher dopamine levels were more likely to pass through obstacles to get food.

This shows that the feeling of inspiration is something that comes from within us. However, there are external factors to consider.

And if you can keep these together, you create a healthy cycle.

Physical activity is one way you can directly affect your brain chemistry and set the stage for motivation.

Exercise is a great way to trigger the release of feel-good hormones. In addition to dopamine, there are serotonin, adrenaline, and endorphins that put you in a post-workout euphoria.

Don’t underestimate the link between your overall health and mental well-being. These have a direct impact on your motivation level, so make time for cardio and other related activities.

But you don’t need to splurge on an elaborate workout routine or fancy equipment and a gym membership.

You can sweat it out on a budget by going to YouTube and making a playlist of basic exercises.

Walking is also incredibly beneficial. And best of all, you can spend as little as 15-30 minutes a day doing it.

As you continue this routine, you’ll feel better about yourself and feel motivated to do more.

Try combining it with other activities like listening to a motivational podcast or music.

You can do this during your work breaks to stay active throughout the day.

Starting with baby steps makes this habit less overwhelming. Ease yourself into it, and you’re more likely to build traction and stick with it.

#2: Be inspired

Another way to light that fire inside you is to seek out other people whose level of success you aspire to. Study their process and the steps they took to get to where they are today.

They likely have a book, video blog, podcast, or other medium where they teach other people to follow in their footsteps.

Reading about their accomplishments and learning their stories is an external source of inspiration that you can internalize.

Research by the American Psychological Association (APA) has uncovered a phenomenon where you can create what it calls “intrinsic rewards” by observing other people.

When you see someone enjoying what they do, that feeling is almost contagious. So in a way, these people can actually pass on their inspiration to you.

#3: Get in the driver’s seat

Most people don’t realize that they act like their own boss and are beating themselves up. This approach is not only frustrating, it’s also incredibly frustrating.

Instead, try this short exercise:

Think of a conversation with yourself. Discuss the tasks you need to do today or this week and decide what you want to get out of it.

In this dialogue, start by saying to yourself, “Okay, so you have to come up with five business ideas today and pick the best one. Also, you have to do 15 minutes of cardio, either in the morning or in the afternoon.”

Then you say, “Okay, but if I do, I’ll watch an hour of Netflix or catch up on my book…whichever I want to do later.”

After you work out the times and terms, you can shake it off and get to work.

By giving yourself options to choose from, you’ll feel more empowered—which will definitely increase your motivation in the process.

#4: Make your goals real

More research from the APA shows that by breaking your big goals down into smaller, specific tasks, you’re more likely to accomplish them (up to 90 percent, in fact).

Measuring your goals with a specific metric (eg, do 30 pushups and 10 burpees in 30 minutes) makes it feel more specific and achievable. Once you have these mini-goals, you can start tackling them one by one.

Write down your big goals, then make a list of related tasks under each one.

Do it the day before (like the night before) so you can run first thing in the morning.

Then when you remove significant chunks from your overall goal, you’ll feel more motivated.

Each time you achieve one of these small, specific goals, you are rewarded with a small dose of dopamine. This will give you the push you need to keep going until you clear all your tasks.

#5: Visualize your future

While getting motivated to accomplish your goals is crucial, it’s also helpful to give yourself a dopamine boost before you start.

As such, you will find that developing the habit of creating a vivid picture of yourself is extremely beneficial Desired results.

Spend about 5-10 minutes each day imagining yourself living the life of your dreams as if it were happening right now.

As we discussed earlier, rats are more motivated to overcome obstacles simply by expecting a reward for doing so. Similarly, thinking about the results of your hard work will release neurochemicals that will pump you up for the task ahead.

Think about what it will feel like to finally accomplish your big goals.

Imagine the people in your life congratulating you and praising you for your efforts.

When you know exactly what’s waiting for you on the other side, you suddenly lose all the excuses that were holding you back.

#6: Positivity in, negativity out

Your faith also has a big to do with being motivated.

Perception is a powerful force, and it can Direct the course of your life.

In addition to visualizing the outcome, giving yourself the right belief is also an effective way to design your reality.

Affirmations are a great way to do this.

These are statements you can repeat to yourself to rewire your belief system.

Many people act on destructive beliefs because of past bad experiences. As a result, they bear labels such as “lost,” “hopeless case” and “damaged.”

Going through life with such baggage will not only destroy your motivation…

… but undermine everything you do at every step along the way.

This is why you need to rewrite that story in your head using powerful statements.

Here’s how to get started:

Think about the qualities you have that will help you achieve your goals.

Also, think about the things you are grateful for.

Use these thoughts as the basis of your affirmations.

They will remind you that you have what it takes to overcome your limitations.

As with visualizing, pretend it’s happening in the present moment—and not at some point in the future.

Thus, you will feel empowered knowing that you are living that great truth here and now.

Here are some examples of affirmations you can use:

Every day, I’m getting stronger, smarter and healthier.
– I am a strong person who can face every obstacle and challenge I face.
– My life is full of endless opportunities to succeed, and I make the most of them every day.
– I am surrounded by people who love and support me and who want me to succeed.

Feel free to use these affirmations or create your own. The more detailed, the better.

It’s even more effective when you say these affirmations (either out loud or in your mind) after doing your visualization exercise.

You can do this before going to bed or make it part of your morning ritual.

All these practices helped me plug the leak in my “inspiration tank”.

If I’m feeling a bit tired, fatigued or burnt out, I make sure I do enough of each of these steps so I’m not running on empty.

On top of staying motivated, however, there’s another habit that gets me out of my own funk.

You see, like Michael, there was a time when I felt unable to overcome inertia. I was outwardly successful and fulfilled, but the people around me didn’t know I was feeling burnt out and desperate.

I was starting to feel like an impostor… until I stumbled upon a life-changing secret.

And more importantly, I can attract every opportunity without having to work 80 hours a week. Just like that, all kinds of blessings flowed effortlessly into my life.
