Why does a room that sounds good in person fall apart on a call?
Your brain is brilliant at clearing words. If someone speaks in a room surrounded by solid walls, the sound bounces off the glass, floor, and table before reaching your ears. A microphone has no such filter. It captures the direct voice and every single reflection at the same time, then sends the entire muddy part down the line.
